WHAT IS REINFORCED PLASTIC?

Glass-reinforced plastic or fiberglass-reinforced plastic (GRP) or (FRP), GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic), is a  composite material made up of a matrix of plastic or resin reinforced with glass fibers.

It is a light, resistant, and very easy to mold material, which is why it is widely used in the production of pieces with soft and complex shapes. This material has a very wide field of applications and functionalities in the nautical, military, commercial and industrial industries.

RAW MATERIALS

"Iron is to concrete, as fiberglass is to resin"

GFRP is made up of a resistant fiberglass structure and a plastic material that acts as its binder. The fiberglass reinforcement provides the composite with mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and heat resistance. The plastic resin provides dielectric chemical resistance and outdoor behavior.

Resins

Derived from thermostable plastics, viscous presentation and different colors depending on their degree of preparation and manufacturer; Polyester resins are divided according to their use:

Resin type Polyester Use Mechanical strength Chemical resistance Heat resistance (HDT) Applications
orthophthalic general half low NR Boats, bathtubs, putties, and parts in general
Terephthalic General half half half Boats, bathtubs, putties, and parts in general
isophthalic General half High average half Tanks, pools, Molds, Gel-Coats
NPG Specialized high high half Pools, slides, tanks
Vinyl Ester Specialized high high high Pipes, reactors, tanks, chimneys

NR=Not recommended

By making certain modifications to the polyester resins in combination with some additional raw materials, it is possible to broaden their functional characteristics; which are divided into the following group:

Resin type Polyester Characteristic

Rigid

High chemical, mechanical, and temperature resistance

semi-rigid

Better behavior to vibrations and impacts.

flexible

Used to modify other resins or Gel-Coats where greater flexibility is required

GLASS FIBERS

Glass fibers are manufactured with most of the raw materials used to make architectural glass, with the formulation and transformation greatly varying in the production process. The combination of fiber and resin as a binder generates a composite material with high mechanical, chemical, and temperature resistance; considering itself as a substitute material for steel, concrete, and wood.

In the glass fiber reinforced plastics industry, depending on the piece to be obtained and the forming method used, there is a wide range of forms of glass fibers on the market that can be used.

ROVING

The Roving is a strand of continuous threads of fiberglass filaments with a certain mechanical twist, manufactured with Type E glass. It is used for pultrusion and filament winding. Twistless roving is generally used for the spray rolling process.

Mat

They consist of chopped glass fibers bonded together using an emulsion binder or polyester powder. Mats are designed to be compatible with unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester, and a variety of other resins. They are used as a gel coat support and laminate reinforcement for contact molding (hand lay-up). The Mat fiber differs by its density, and is commonly found in the market "MAT 700" from GRAMMAGES of 225, 300, 450, and 600 g/m²; being the most commercial the MAT of 450 g/m².

WOVEN

These fabrics are made of woven rovings, high-performance fabrics, used to produce high-strength fabrics for structurally sound applications such as shipping containers, ballistic armor, aircraft wings, and doors.

SURFACE VEIL

They are fine fiberglass fabrics (woven or non-woven) that have a smooth and highly uniform surface, with low weights that vary between 30 and 45 g/m². It has superior glass quality, and is specially designed to resist chemical attack (veil type “C”). Some applications in the industry are found in the manufacture of tanks that store corrosive chemical substances, ducts, pipes, and some specialized coatings.

Remember: There is no bad material but badly applied.
